Boiling, Chemical Treatment or Filtration: Which One Do You Need?

Boiling is the single most reliable way to kill the bacteria, viruses and parasites that make people sick after a disaster. Chemical treatment with unscented household bleach works when you can’t boil, but it won’t kill every parasite on its own. Filtration removes particles and most pathogens but needs to be paired with a second step for full protection. Most real emergencies call for a combination of these methods, not just one.

Water Contamination Warning Signs to Act On First

Before you treat anything, know when water is off-limits no matter which method you use.

  • Fuel, chemical or gasoline smell: boiling, chemical treatment and filtration cannot remove fuel, toxic chemicals or radioactive material from water. Use a different source and contact your local health department.
  • Official boil-water or do-not-drink notice: follow local authority guidance exactly, since some notices mean no treatment at home makes the water safe.
  • Water from a home heating radiator or boiler: never use this water for drinking, cooking or hygiene.

Determine How Much Water You Actually Need

Store at least one gallon of water per person per day for drinking and basic sanitation. Children, nursing mothers, sick household members and anyone in a hot climate may need more, and needs can double in very hot temperatures. Never ration drinking water unless local authorities tell you to — drink what you need today and look for more tomorrow.

The Three Treatment Methods Compared

Before treating suspicious water by any method, let any particles settle to the bottom, or strain the water through a clean cloth, paper towel or coffee filter first.

Boiling

  • Kills bacteria, viruses and parasites — the broadest protection of the three methods.
  • Bring clear water to a rolling boil for 1 full minute; at elevations above 6,500 feet, boil for 3 minutes.
  • Let the water cool before drinking, and pour it between two clean containers to improve the taste.
  • Does not remove heavy metals, salts or most other chemicals.
  • Limitation: uses fuel and requires a heat source, which may be scarce in a longer emergency.

Chemical Treatment (Bleach)

  • Kills most disease-causing microorganisms when used correctly.
  • Use only regular, unscented household liquid bleach containing 5.25–6.0 percent sodium hypochlorite. Never use scented, color-safe bleach or bleach with added cleaners.
  • Add 1/8 teaspoon of bleach per gallon of water, stir and let it stand 30 minutes.
  • The water should have a slight bleach smell afterward. If it doesn’t, repeat the dose and wait another 15 minutes. If it still doesn’t smell of chlorine, discard it and find another source.
  • Limitation: chemical disinfectants do not work as well as boiling against some parasites, so filtering cloudy water first matters.
  • Does not remove heavy metals, salts or most other chemicals.

Filtration

  • Removes sediment and many pathogens by physically straining water through a fine membrane.
  • Best used as a first step on cloudy or murky water, then followed by boiling or chemical disinfection for full pathogen protection.
  • Filter capability varies by product — check the manufacturer’s specification for which pathogens and particle sizes a specific filter is actually rated to remove.
  • Does not remove fuel, toxic chemicals or radioactive contamination.

Distillation

Distillation kills the same microbes as boiling and chlorination, and it also removes heavy metals, salts and most other chemicals that boiling and chemical treatment leave behind. Fill a pot halfway with water, hang a clean cup from the lid’s handle so the cup sits right-side-up when the lid is inverted (keeping it clear of the water), and boil for 20 minutes. The vapor that condenses and drips into the cup is your distilled water. It’s slower and uses more fuel than boiling alone, so it’s best reserved for situations where you know or suspect chemical contamination.

Quick Decision Path

  • Water smells like fuel or chemicals? Don’t treat it with any method here. Find another source and contact your local health department.
  • You have a working stove or fire and fuel to spare? Boiling is your most reliable option.
  • No way to boil, or you need to treat a larger volume? Use chlorine bleach at the correct dose and wait time.
  • Water is cloudy or has visible sediment? Filter or strain first, then boil or chemically treat.
  • You suspect heavy metals, salts or other chemical contamination? Distillation is the only one of these methods that removes them.

Extra Caution: Infants, Pregnant Household Members and Anyone Immunocompromised

Water needs and sensitivity to contamination are not the same for everyone in a household. Infant formula should only be made with water known to be safe. Anyone who is pregnant, immunocompromised, or caring for a sick or elderly household member should treat “possibly contaminated” water with extra caution and favor boiling, which offers the broadest pathogen protection, over chemical treatment alone when a heat source is available. What the Evidence Doesn’t Cover

None of these home methods test water for chemical, fuel or radiological contamination — there’s no home method that confirms water is safe after that kind of exposure. Boiling and chemical treatment don’t remove heavy metals or most chemicals, only distillation does. And commercial filter performance varies significantly by product and by how well the filter has been maintained, so a manufacturer’s rated capacity is not a guarantee under real-world conditions.
