Four backup-power paths
Portable generator with cords: The generator stays outside. Correct outdoor-rated cords run directly to a few chosen devices. This fits a small load without fixed home circuits.
Portable generator with transfer equipment: A qualified electrician installs a safe way to feed selected home circuits. The generator still stays outdoors.
Permanent standby generator: A professionally installed outdoor unit connects through transfer equipment. Installation, fuel, service, permits, and local rules affect whether it fits.
Battery power station: A battery and inverter provide limited indoor power without engine exhaust. This may fit apartments and small loads. Battery size and inverter limits decide what it can run.
Your first choice is the power path that matches your housing and essential loads.
Size the load before you shop
The American Red Cross generator guide tells buyers to add the power needs of the devices and lights they plan to use. Check labels, nameplates, and manuals rather than relying on a generic online list.
Write down the running watts for each essential device. Then check its starting demand. Motors in refrigerators, pumps, and some other equipment can draw much more power for a short time when they start. The Red Cross notes that some machines may draw up to three times as much at startup.
Decide what must run together. Staggering loads may reduce the size you need, but the plan must still cover the largest startup event.
Most small household devices use 120 volts. Many major appliances use 240 volts. If your plan includes 240-volt equipment, home wiring, or a load you do not understand, ask a qualified electrician to size and connect it.
Do not choose a unit that only matches your paper total. Compare that total with the maker’s running and starting ratings, load instructions, outlet types, and duty limits. If the numbers are unclear, stop and get professional help.

In this example, the regular group uses 600 running watts. Refrigerator startup raises the short demand to about 1,600 watts. Pump B has the largest example startup demand, so the buyer must check whether the generator can support that event.
Your refrigerator and pump may use very different amounts. Replace every example with the numbers from your own equipment. Then check the generator manual for how its running rating, surge rating, outlets, and voltage limits apply.
Fuel choice is a logistics decision
Gasoline, propane, dual-fuel, and standby systems solve different supply problems. Ask what you can obtain during an outage, store legally, and maintain.
The Red Cross says generator fuel belongs in an approved safety can and outside living areas. Local laws may limit the amount and storage location. Keep fuel away from fuel-burning appliances and other ignition sources.
Never refuel a running or hot generator. Turn it off and let it cool first. Use only the fuel named in the manual, and follow its maintenance schedule.
Dual-fuel models add supply choice but not less storage or maintenance. Standby units reduce setup but add installation and service. Price the whole plan.

Connection and placement rules
Carbon monoxide is a gas you cannot see or smell. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission safety alert says portable generators belong outside only, at least 20 feet from the home, with exhaust facing away.
Never use one in a home, garage, basement, crawlspace, shed, or any enclosed or partly enclosed area. Keep it outdoors and at least 20 feet from the home, windows, doors, and attached garages.
Install battery-powered carbon-monoxide alarms, or alarms with battery backup, on every home level and outside sleeping areas. If an alarm sounds or someone develops possible poisoning symptoms, get everyone to fresh air and call emergency services.
Never plug a generator into a wall outlet. That can send electricity backward into utility lines. It can injure utility workers, neighbors, or people in your home.
The OSHA portable-generator safety sheet says a building connection needs a properly installed transfer switch and a qualified electrician. For direct device use, use intact, grounded, three-prong cords rated for the intended watts or amps.
Keep the generator dry without moving it indoors. Use an open canopy on a dry surface if the manual permits that setup. Do not touch electrical parts with wet hands or stand in water while handling cords.
Battery power for apartments and small loads
A fuel generator is not an apartment or balcony solution. A battery power station can operate indoors because it has no fuel-burning engine. It can also reduce noise and remove the need to store gasoline or propane.
Check four numbers before buying: continuous inverter watts, short surge watts, usable watt-hours, and recharge time. A device must fit the inverter limit before battery capacity matters. Motors and compressors may also have a startup demand.
Check the power station’s instructions. Confirm that its capacity and output meet the connected equipment’s requirements.
If you depend on an electricity-powered medical device or refrigerated medicine, talk to your medical provider about an outage plan. The Ready.gov outage guide also advises planning where you will go if the home becomes unsafe or essential power cannot be maintained.
Who should not buy a fuel generator
Do not buy one if you cannot place it at least 20 feet from the home and other occupied buildings. That usually rules out balconies, shared hallways, garages, and small apartment patios.
Before buying, ask your local fire department whether local laws restrict how much fuel you may store or where you may store it. Do not assume you can solve a storage problem after a storm begins.
Do not plan a home-wiring connection if you will not hire a qualified electrician. A homemade wall-outlet cable is not a shortcut. It is a backfeed hazard.
A buyer who cannot move, maintain, fuel, and test an engine may be better served by a battery system, a professionally maintained standby system, or a written relocation plan.
Your pre-buy checklist and bottom line

- Confirm the generator’s ratings, outlets, cord needs, and manual limits.
- Measure a safe outdoor operating location before buying a fuel model.
- Check local electrical, fire, noise, fuel-storage, lease, and permit rules.
- Price cords, transfer equipment, installation, fuel cans, alarms, covers, and maintenance.
- Install and test carbon-monoxide alarms before the next outage.
- Write down who starts, connects, monitors, cools, and refuels the unit.
A model overview cannot choose your load plan. Apply the same load and seller checks to every model.
The right backup-power system fits your real load and can be used safely in your actual home. If placement, wiring, voltage, or medical-device support remains uncertain, get qualified help before buying.
