Building a Room-by-Room Escape Route

  2. What is the second way out if the primary route is blocked by smoke or fire — a window, a different hallway, or a fire escape?
  3. Can every window that serves as an escape route actually be opened by the people who sleep in that room, including children and older adults?
  4. Is the route ever blocked by furniture, storage, or a habit of keeping the door closed and locked?
  5. Does anyone in this room need help waking up or getting out — a young child, an older adult, or a person with a mobility limitation?

Draw the results as a simple floor plan showing every door, window, hallway, and staircase, with two exits marked for each room. This visual plan is what you will walk through together during drills.

Choosing a Meeting Place

Pick one fixed point outside the home, at a safe distance, where everyone regroups after getting out — a specific tree, mailbox, or neighbor’s driveway works better than “outside,” which is too vague for a stressful moment. Every household member, including regular guests and caregivers, should know this location. Once outside, stay outside and take attendance. If someone is unaccounted for, tell firefighters immediately rather than going back in.

Practicing the Plan

An escape plan that lives on paper does not help anyone at 2 a.m. Practice turns the plan into a habit.

  • Run a full drill at least twice a year
  • Run one drill during the day and one at night, since a nighttime fire behaves differently for a household that is asleep
  • Practice using the secondary exit, not just the everyday route out of the house
  • Time how long it takes everyone to reach the meeting place, and adjust the plan if it takes too long
  • Update the plan whenever a bedroom changes, a household member’s mobility changes, or you add a security bar, extra lock, or storage that could block a window exit

Special Considerations for Children, Older Adults, and Pets

A plan that only works for a healthy adult moving quickly is not a complete plan. For infants and toddlers, plan to carry them rather than expecting them to follow directions.
