Federal guidance is built around a 3-day minimum with a 2-week stretch goal, not a standardized 30-day figure. A 30-day supply simply applies that same per-person daily formula over a longer stretch, for households that want a larger buffer than the standard two-week target.

How Much Water You Actually Need for 30 Days

Using the CDC/Ready.gov baseline of 1 gallon per person per day:

  • 1 person: approximately 30 gallons
  • 2 people: approximately 60 gallons
  • 4 people: approximately 120 gallons
  • 6 people: approximately 180 gallons

These figures cover drinking and basic sanitation only — not bathing, laundry, or dishwashing at normal household levels. CDC and Ready.gov both note that children, nursing mothers, people who are sick, and anyone in a hot climate may need more than the baseline gallon. If your household fits any of those categories, plan for extra rather than assuming the minimum will stretch far enough.

A Practical 30-Day Water Storage Checklist

Always follow the specific instructions printed on your bleach or tablet product’s label rather than a general ratio, since concentrations vary by product.

Limitations of This Plan

  • This guide reflects general federal guidance current as of publication. Requirements can change, and your household’s real usage may differ from the baseline formula.
  • The 1-gallon-per-day figure covers drinking and minimal sanitation. It does not account for showering, laundry, or heavy cleaning — a 30-day outage that also affects your water utility may require you to plan additional non-potable water separately.
  • Storage math assumes water stays safe for the full period. Container quality, seal integrity, and storage conditions all affect that assumption.
  • Large volumes of stored water (dozens to over a hundred gallons) add significant weight. Confirm your storage location — especially elevated floors — can support it before committing to large containers.
  • Chemical disinfection does not address every contaminant. It’s a backup method, not a substitute for a verified safe water source when one is available.

Who Should Be Extra Cautious

  • Households with infants, pregnant or nursing individuals, or anyone who is chronically ill: CDC and Ready.gov both note these groups may need more than the baseline daily amount — plan above the standard formula rather than at it.
  • Households in hot climates: Water needs can roughly double in high heat, particularly if air conditioning is also unavailable during an outage.
  • Households on private wells: A power outage can also take out your well pump, so stored water may be your only source until power and the well system are confirmed safe.
